Gilt Japanese Buddhist Altar Table - Taishō Period Style - Ginger Jar They are decorativeThis incredibly rare Japanese altar table is a Buddhist altar table dating to the Taish period (1912 1926). Constructed from zelkova (red elm) and coated in fuki urushi lacquer. Fuki urushi lacquering is a technique that accentuates the natural contrasts in wood grain. The table has gilded paneling over a cloud carved apron and sits atop scroll legs wrapping around sacred hoju jewels. It would have originally been made for a Japanese Buddhist temple.
